Look at the most successful people around you. Look at the most successful people in the world. They tend to have it all: time, money, nice clothes, expensive cars, beautiful houses, vacationing in exotic places, they have lives to die for!

Well, I have good news for you. You too can have these lifestyles, and I promise you don’t have to die for it! All you have to do is adopt an attitude of success. If we look at the most successful people in the world, what do they do that makes them so successful? Ask yourself that question and, through a series of successive answers, you will come to the conclusion that they have their own business. Whether it’s Richard Branson or Joe the panel thumper, they all have their own business and use it to finance their amazing lifestyles.

However, the exploration does not stop here, because not everyone wants to have their own business. Does that mean they can’t have personal success? Of course not! However, you will have to explore deeper. What do these people do, who have successful businesses? What about the most successful employees? Who are they? What do they do?

Now this is a bit difficult, so let me give you a hand. The most successful people in an organization tend to be the sales people. The people who are selling. They earn a lot of money! This is true even if you have your own business. Makes sense doesn’t it? If you don’t sell your product, your business will be ruined! From Richard Branson to Joe the panel beater, they all need to sell, and they do. They are effective salespeople.

“OK I understand!” You say, “You want me to be a salesman! Quit my job of being a really good office manager and be a salesman! You want me to sell used cars and insurance!”

Well not exactly. I want you to adopt the lifestyle and attitude of a sales person, but that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to go into a sales-related job. If he does, I don’t have a problem with that either, but more realistically, I want him to adopt the attitude of a salesman.

Many people dislike vendors, so this may be a challenge for you. Consider this: If you have an aversion to this exercise or salespeople, maybe there is something you should embrace and be comfortable with, instead of rejecting it and constantly being uncomfortable with it.

Think about this for a moment: what are the characteristics of the best salespeople in the world? Those professional sellers who are closing big deals, how do they operate? Take a minute or so to think about it, and really think about what they do, how they behave, what they say that really makes them successful. I also want you to keep in mind that the most successful seller is not the dodgy one or the quick sell either.

Now write them. Wait with me here, there’s a good reason why I’m asking you to do this, so go ahead and take a minute to write this down.

Here are some of the things you could have written:

they are really persuasive

they are always motivated

they are always excited

They never say anything negative.

they dress well

They don’t take things personally.

They always make me feel like I’m important.

You may have written many, many more. So I imagine you’re going to ask me the point of all this. Check your list, maybe modify it with some things I’ve written as well. Now ask yourself, “If I could take on one or two, or even more (maybe even all) of those characteristics, what would my life look like? What does that open up for me? How would I show myself in the world?”

Once again, if you feel uncomfortable with this, you should consider what you should embrace rather than reject.
