Is baseball sign stealing cheating?

In a recent game between the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins, Fox Sports footage showed Twins catcher Joe Mauer indicating to the batter what pitch the Tigers pitcher was about to throw. I’m not sure why this particular case of sign theft has gotten so much attention, other than the fact that it was so obvious what was going on.

I don’t know about you, but I have absolutely no problem with this at all. I’d even say Joe Mauer wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t tell the hitter what pitch was coming if he knew. I mean, why wouldn’t you? Everyone on the baseball field knew what was going on. The opposing receiver even changed signs several times to confuse Mauer.

Sign stealing in baseball is taught at a very young age and is nothing more than a staple of the game. Of course, there are some things in baseball that just aren’t done.

1) You miss the first baseman’s glove and knock the ball out as it tries to tag you. (Alex Rodriguez)

2) You don’t tip the opposing batsman just because he’s your friend or from the same country. (Alex Rodriguez)

3. And he doesn’t yell ‘Got it’ as he circles third base and opposing infielders try to catch the ball. (Alex Rodriguez)

Has anyone else noticed that Alex Rodriguez has been accused of the 3 examples that immediately came to mind when thinking about the things you don’t do in baseball?
