The line of electric cars that will soon be available near you is impressive. To name a few, there’s the Tesla Motors Roadster, designed as an exotic luxury sports car for two, with a range of 250 miles, a top speed of 125 mph, and a ticket price of 109,000. Then there’s the Tesla Motors Model S, 300-mile range, 5-passenger, four-door sedan, top speed: 120 mph, ticket price $ 57,400. The Th! Nk City described as “a pint-sized urban rugged” is a 2-door, two- or four-passenger hatchback with a top speed of 68 mph, pricing not yet available. This car is ideal for the city with crowded or non-existent parking and a traffic speed of 15-20 mph during rush hour, which seems to be all day. If priced right, this car would be ideal for my teenage son who just got his license and tends to drive too fast. Next up is the Mitsubishi iMiev, it’s a four-door, five-passenger hatchback, with a 100-mile range, a top speed of 80 mph, and a price tag of $ 46,500.

These cars are 100% gasoline-free and by 2012 there will be more than a dozen electric vehicles in showrooms and rental fleets. It seems that there will be a car that suits various tastes, needs and pockets. These cars are a step in the right direction because they are emission free! Here is the problem. The cars still run on electricity probably derived from fossil fuels. Therefore, electricity derived from fossil fuels powered by electric cars indirectly increases air pollution, but less than traditional vehicles. Electric cars could be completely green if they were powered by electricity derived from solar or wind energy. I suspect that many people would love to use solar or wind power, but these forms of energy are still expensive.

The prospect of driving a fuel-efficient vehicle is a clear possibility. As mentioned above, electric cars are a step in the right direction. Alternative energy appears to be the wave of the future and the cost is already dropping. Gasoline and diesel vehicles consume less fuel and the consumer can consult Yahoo’s Green Vehicle Guide before purchasing a vehicle. Additionally, there are products available that decrease harmful pollutants and improve vehicle performance.
