18 ways to love your home on a budget

Don’t you just love watching flip-it and home makeover shows? Do you feel like remodeling your own house?

Take a look at this list of inexpensive upgrade ideas.

Inside:

  1. Change cabinet hardware. Do this in the kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere you have knobs that are dull, outdated, or just plain tired of. A great place to find them is Habitat for Humanity Restors, garage sales, and flea markets.
  2. Change your screens. Take a look at the big box stores and start noticing the lampshades you like at yard sales, even if you don’t like the lamp they came with!
  3. Paint interior brick. We painted the fireplace in our last house a dark forest green, almost black. When we renovate the houses we buy, we paint the chimney (interior) brick to match the trim in the room. If your brick is stained or discolored, this really adds a clean, new look to the room.
  4. Paint furniture you don’t like instead of replacing it. Change the hardware to give them the new look you want.
  5. Screw hooks under hanging kitchen cabinets. Use the hooks to hold cups, measuring cups or hand towels. Provides easy access and frees up space inside the cabinet.
  6. Add a shelf above a door. Paint it the color of the trim and use it to display trinkets.
  7. Add a chair rail to dining room, bedroom, living room, any room for more details. Paint the bottom wall 2 shades darker for added drama.
  8. Change the window treatments. Natural blinds are easy to install, or buy a couple of panels and hang them from a pole above the window. Find them cheaply at big box stores or a home decor store.
  9. Re-hang pictures in different rooms. Hang groups of different sizes, shapes and styles. Add a shelf, mirror, or dimensional artwork to create interest in the grouping.
  10. Replace doorknobs, especially those that are tarnished or worn. What about glass knobs for bathrooms?
  11. Replace the switch plate covers. I found some great ones at a salvage store. Shop for unique covers at flea markets and garage sales.
  12. Paint a portion of the kitchen wall with chalkboard paint for messages and lists. Nail a picture frame around it to make it look like the message board is hanging on the wall.

Exterior

  1. Install new house numbers. Always make sure your address is clearly marked so that emergency vehicles can find your home if necessary.
  2. Buy a new mailbox or paint the one you have. Make sure the post is new or freshly painted as well.
  3. Get out a new doormat.
  4. Clean gutters, rake the garden, sweep the cobwebs. Sometimes we forget to clean the outside, but the whole house feels better when the outside looks well cared for.
  5. Paint the front door and shutters.
  6. Add a few new plants or plant bulbs that promise new blooms in the spring.
