The 2013 NFL Draft is just around the corner. This is National Football League draft class 78. While the 2012 Draft class will be short on quarterbacks, the 2013 NFL Draft is not lacking in talent. NFL Draft weekend begins on Thursday, April 25, 2013 with the first round picks followed by rounds 2-7 spread over 26-27. The Kansas City Chiefs have secured the first overall pick in the 2013 Draft with a dismal 2-14 record in the 2012 season. With Andy Reid now at the helm, the Chiefs are looking to add to the already talented roster and start posting some victories.
The results of the NFL Draft depend on the order in which the teams select the players. Even with Kansas City getting the top pick honor, this isn’t always for the best. What they do with it could determine a successful draft outcome or a failure. Kansas City is in real need of a quarterback, but can still go with the No. 1 overall favorite, Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel.
The NFL Draft is literal with failure when it comes to first round picks. In 1997, both Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were available for the draft. As history shows, the Indianapolis Colts made the right call on Peyton Manning, while the San Diego Chargers ended up with the Leaf bust. The difference is staggering for an NFL franchise when they do well and devastating when they don’t.
With the pressure of competing with a limited number of qualified prospects, some teams have found success using a plug and play system. There is no better example of this than the New England Patriots and their ability to win year after year with just about any player. Their quarterback, Tom Brady, is the mainstay of the offense and a big reason for their success. Needless to say, Brady was drafted out of Michigan in the sixth round.
This season is nowhere near the draft class that 2012 was. We likely won’t see such a talented draft class for years to come. Three rookie quarterbacks led their team to the NFL Playoffs for the first time in history. Even without the abundance of quarterbacks in the 2013 draft class, there are plenty of defensive talents in this year’s class.
