6 Ways Leaders Must Set the Right Example!

How can anyone consider themselves a meaningful and effective leader unless/until they consistently set the best/right example for others to hopefully follow? Regardless of the type of organization, whether political, public office, for-profit, non-profit, large or small, etc., the reality is that both actual and potential stakeholders look at a leader, and consider the kind of example you set. One must commit to leading – by – example, rather than just talk – the – talk (must be willing to walk – the – walk)! Therefore, it behooves a true leader to set the best example, motivate and inspire past, present and potential members. With that in mind, this article will briefly attempt to consider, examine, review, and discuss, 6 ways, that is, such an important consideration.

1. Words matter: Although we often witness rhetoric and empty promises from candidates running for office, as well as those elected to leadership positions, the truth is that words matter! The message one articulates can either be inspiring and motivating or have the opposite effect!

2. Do what I say, or do?: Do what I say, not what I do? Perhaps, nothing, damages the confidence of those you seek to have, follow you, as well as exhibit clear conflicts, between what you say to others and your personal actions! Great leaders must set the right example, leading – by – example, and always committing to do at least as much (preferably more) as you ask anyone else to commit to.

3. Absolute integrity: Absolute integrity must be exhibited, not merely, whenever, convenient. Especially in this increasingly digital world, it’s important to realize that someone is always watching and you have to do the right thing, every time!

Four. genuine empathy: For most people, their two favorite sounds are the sound of their own voice and hearing their name. Great leaders must listen effectively (much more than talk) and commit to learning, from every conversation and experience, in order to proceed, with the highest degree of genuine empathy, and aligning their emphasis accordingly!

5. Attitude: It is very important to fully understand the need to maintain a positive can do attitude, focused on making a difference, for the better! Be careful though, this should align with reality, and avoid wearing rose-colored glasses!

6. Skill/Ability – Set: If you want to lead, effectively, voluntarily, take professionally designed leadership training programs and develop a relevant and well-developed set of skills and abilities.

How/why would someone follow you, if they didn’t believe, in the example you gave? Are you up for the task?
