A brief history of bunk beds

Although no one can verify its inception or debut, there is no denying the fact that bunk beds have been around for many years. Loft beds, futon bunk beds, and standard bunk beds, in one form or another, have occupied the bedrooms and the hearts of parents and children for generations. And rightly so too, because there’s nothing quite like the fun and joy that comes with sleeping in a bunk with your best friend or favorite cousin and chatting all night, when you know very well that you should be sleeping instead.

And while it’s nearly impossible to trace where they actually came from, it seems we can thank the ancient Egyptians for, at the very least, the idea and concept of the bunks. And although there is no visual evidence to confirm this, it can be safely assumed that the high beds of the ancient Egyptians looked drastically different than the modern, comfortable bunkers we are familiar with and used to today. With that said, the fact of the matter is that bunk beds have definitely come a long way over the years.

Today’s modern and original bunk beds come in a wide variety of designs, shapes, colors, and materials. In the early days of modern and popular bunk beds, you simply had two square bunk beds, of similar shapes and sizes, placed one on top of the other, a testament to function, if not form. Fast forward a few decades though, today’s commercially available bunk beds that are commercially available are equal parts sleeping devices and equal parts works of art. Yes, bunk beds have become not just something to put in a bedroom, but a focal point of the home.

There are bunk beds that are made from high-end wood materials such as maple or walnut bunk beds. For other people, they may want something a little more powerful; therefore, they are looking to buy a metal or iron bunk bed. And in addition to the materials used to build these beds, they are also infused with touches of color and personality. Cherry color, bright white, dark blue, black, silver, and other hues and shades are now available for people to purchase and place in their children’s bedrooms. That is, without a doubt, a far cry from the beds that the ancient Egyptians first invented so many years ago.

Another advancement of bunk beds is the shape bunk beds can take today. Yes, the conventional double bunks over two single beds are still available, but now you can also get two double bunks over full bunk beds. These are bunk beds that have a full-size bed on the bottom and a simple single bed on top of it. Today’s bunk beds serve a much greater purpose than simply providing a place to sleep; now they also serve as space savers and decorative pieces for the home. However, no matter what style, shape or form the bunk beds take on, and what they will take on in the future, there is still one look that will always remain, and that is the sheer joy and fun that bunk beds can provide every night.

No matter what bunk beds will look like in the future, there is still something to call the top bunk, then climb the ladder and sit high in the sky (or at least it feels that way for a kid). Now, no one knows if the ancient Egyptians enjoyed climbing a ladder and calling the bunk above, but even if they didn’t, at least they started something that has lasted as long as all those pyramids they built.
