Many people describe the practice of drywall finishing as more of an art than a renovation or construction project. Drywall finishing is one of the most important parts of drywall installation. For example, if not finished properly, drywall can look unattractive, messy, and misaligned. 1. You must ensure that the drywall is securely fastened to the supporting structure. Use long, sturdy nails, even two sets of nails, so the panels are securely fastened to the framing. Make sure the nail heads are embedded in the panels so they are easy to cover with compound. Take care when nailing so as not to accidentally hit the panel and cause dents. If you do, you will still be able to hide it with a filler of joint compound.

2. The two types of tape you can use on drywall are fiberglass mesh tape and paper tape. Because it has its own adhesive, you can put fiberglass mesh tape directly on the drywall. The paper tape is placed over the joint compound.

3. The two types of drywall compounds you can use are powders that you mix yourself or in a pre-mixed container. Premixed is much easier to use as it allows you to lay down a consistent material that is not too thick and not too loose. When stirring the mixture, do not stir it too much to prevent air bubbles from forming in the covered joints.

4. The small section between the drywall will create compression. To create a smooth, even surface that matches the rest of the panels, you must apply the mixture over the compression or joint. First, spread a thin layer over the area and place the tape over it. Make sure it’s smooth and doesn’t overlap. Once you have it even and smooth, apply a second thin coat to the taped surface. Smooth it out while making sure no pieces of tape stick out. You have to repeat this application for each joint. Apply with a trowel or drywall knife. Then let it dry. It is better if you let it dry overnight. After it dries, you can lightly sand the area to make it smooth and even with the rest of the panel. Make sure that no compound powder particles remain. Also, wear a mask when sanding so you don’t inhale particles. If you are not satisfied with the result, you can apply another thin layer and repeat the process.

A poor drywall finish can make a room look dirty and unattractive. It’s important to take your time to make sure you’re happy with the end result, especially when finishing corners.
