Bribery can be counterproductive when it comes to children

The other day, at a kitty party, my friend told me that she doesn’t keep candy or candy at home because she will eat them all. The mother of the group practically replied, “How do you bribe the children then?”

A toy, candy, entertainment, money, if you’re wondering what harm is there in bribing. After all, who is not motivated to receive a small incentive? Several parents seem to agree with the concept of “bribery” as they consider it harmless. Parents find that rewarding their children with toys / candy / gadgets can send an unspoken but powerful message to children, such as:

You can never behave without bribery

Good behavior is for adults only and not for children

Everything has a price

With so much health conscious, limiting sugar intake is one of them. When using foods like candies, sweets, chocolates as a reward, children assume that these are the best and most valuable foods than other foods. Not just food, but toys and now devices like tablets, iPods, etc.

When you, as a parent, give bribes to your children, your child receives the following message that “you must pay me to do so.” Perhaps the bribery with rewards could be short-term, like stopping tantrums or doing homework, but how far it will go and how long you, as a parent, will be rewarded with different types of bribes. Initially they are just candy and toys but slowly they turn into expensive bribes like iPod / tablets etc. The more you snatch, the more it backfires.

Rewarding children with multiple bribes does not teach them responsibility and respect. These kinds of quick fixes only make you feel guilty for not making your children learn the value of things. Children will never have an idea of what parents had to struggle to earn so much money until they become parents. It is a vicious chain that requires breaking and making children learn about their responsibilities and value what they have. When it comes to children, it can take time to break the entire bribery process; eventually you can make them learn the good habit of taking responsibility without expectations. This will help uproot a responsible nature and will be of great help in the future.
