Electronic locks: pros and cons

Electronic locks that are used for the home generally use a keypad or buttons to enter a group of numbers to unlock the doors. Today there are more electronic locks available that you can open with a keyless entry fob. They are like the ones you use to lock and unlock your car. Some even work with your computer or smartphone.

The basic idea behind the electric lock is very simple. Instead of using a key or worrying about losing it, all you do with electronic locks is press buttons or use a keypad to enter a code that you have decided to enter your home. There are some that will allow you to use the key to lock the door when you leave or stay home. If you have one of those that has a mechanical key cylinder that uses a key to lock the doors, then your electronic lock does not offer you any more security than a normal key lock. Having a mechanical key cylinder would make it easier to open the lock and allow a burglar to break into your home.

Today’s high-tech locks work wirelessly, even if they have a keypad that is exposed. Today’s locks use communication technology like WiFi, Bluetooth, and Z-Wave. If you have to use a keypad or button in your code, make sure no one sees what it is because they could use the information to access your home.

• Children: When you have children, it is easier to keep the doors closed when they are younger, and as they grow older and come home from school before you get home from work, it is easier for them to enter the house. No more worrying about lost keys.
• Electronic convenience locks offer great security and when you enter the home it is easy to relock the door with a keyless entry keypad or fob. When you open the door with a key, you sometimes forget to lock it again. In addition, if there are several people who have to access the house, it is easier to use a push-button or keypad code than to have many keys to be issued.

Cons of electronic locks

• Hacking – This is the only real downside to having such sophisticated locks. There are cybercriminals who enjoy trying to overcome security obstacles to enter a home.
