Fear: friend or foe of an addict?

I remember there were moral values classes in my school and it was decided that they would teach us the Bhagwad Geeta to instill in us some ethics, which would be beneficial in the long run. I’d like to share the same here before getting to the main point. So there was a time when Lord Krishna told Arjun, who was supposed to fight for his territory, that he would be killed for his fears before he even started fighting the war! So he was asked to gather all his strength and fight with all his might, first with his fear and then with the opposing army.

The reason I have brought this point here is that fear is indeed the greatest enemy of human beings and most of the time we lose the battles of our life because of it. Now you must be thinking, how is it related to addiction?

Let’s start connecting it with some examples related to the life of an addict.

1. Sam is a weed addict and has planned a trip to Goa. He plans to be there for 3 days and collects his substance a week before leaving. You get 3 grams more than you usually get. Why?

2. Mike is a heroin addict. He keeps just enough money to get to college. You know they won’t give you your pocket money before the new month starts. There are still 2 days for that. He chases after all the things he has left at once, due to anxiety. Why?

3. There is a court order: no more cigarettes will be sold. Matt collects 100 boxes from different stores. Why?

The answer to all questions remains the same and that is FEAR. Sam is scared, what if he runs out of grass before his trip ends? Mike is scared, how would he last those two days and what if he can’t find the money to buy more? Matt is scared, what if he doesn’t get his next cigarette?

There are several fears that an addict has. It is not only related to your substance, but to various situations you encounter in your life. And these fears can even show paradoxes such as the existence of fear of change and fear of constancy or non-change! Fear of others and of that fear of oneself! Fear of disagreement in the peer group and fear of relapse at the same time! Therefore, we can say that fear is a powerful motivator. It can make any human do anything, rather it leads people to a life or death situation.

The power to make your fears come true can be used as the power to make positive affirmations come true too

I’ve often heard this from people: “Whatever you fear, it will definitely come true. But if you think positive, it might not happen.” It is a myth. Everything is in your mind. If you have the energy to make your fears come true, then you can use the same amount of energy to create positive things.

When connecting you with addicts, they are always afraid that their concerns will hit them hard in reality. They want to escape from them.

We all work according to our convenience. So when an addict wants to take their substance, they would think of various alibis. He would talk about his bad experiences in life. But what about the ‘Bad Trips’ from the drugs he had? Would you ever say that I no longer want to use drugs because I threw up and lost my senses after taking them? But yes, I would definitely say that I don’t want to feel happy without drugs, because if I do, I will lose my reason for happiness!

The humanistic existentialism school of thought says that we all have a purpose for living. There is nothing humans do without a reason. Addicts consider all negative reasons to live. They choose to stay scared of happiness and joy without drugs.

What to do in reality instead of fearing situations

Thought recognition: Consider what exactly your thoughts and feelings are.

Gain control over them: after you know how to accept your thoughts and feelings, you control them. It’s your mind, so don’t let it control you, but you control it.

Reason them: since there would be several thoughts at the same time, so you must reason with your understanding what could be or has been their implication in your life.

Look at the practicality of the solutions your mind gives: Once you have seen the repercussions you have faced due to your actions, you need to introspect with consequential thinking and give your thoughts a reality check to see if you can put them. in practice.

In case of a positive response from the mind, make it come true. Finally, if you think there is something positive that you can practice, you should do it.

We know that it is not so easy to change that streak of fear. But you have honed your fear through consistent practice, you can hone confidence and make the right decisions through practice as well. You or your loved ones need rehabilitation if you think that there are too many fears that are bothering your mind or theirs and you or they cannot stop using any psychoactive substance.

Try it at least. And see how well it works. You know, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
