Hellgate London – A deeper look

In my last review, if you can call it that, my pick and highest character was at level 14; that was a hunter. Now that the hunter is at level 20 and I’ve also made a swordmaster who has reached level 21. My summoner and summoner haven’t really seen much action, though the summoner really enjoys the five fire elementals from him; everything seems to die before she can shoot.

The point of this, of course, is that I’m still enjoying this game. I’m not hardcore in any sense of the term, actually I hardly play. But unlike other games, I keep coming back to this one.

Some notes about my system; It is new with “almost” the best components on the market. It’s an XFX nForce680i LT motherboard with 2 gigs of Corsair RAM and a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX (needs more RAM, but I’m lazy). And that’s where my geekiness regarding computers ends. I’m listing these items because I’m still getting some random crashes, I really think it’s the RAM, but I could be wrong. I have all the stupid Windows updates and fixes for Vista (what a mess that was, the game companies must have wanted blood for that debacle, I mean, really, they were assured that Vista would support almost everything out of the box). ; but hey, when you make billions a year, I guess you don’t have to be fancy with your product anymore).

Random crashes aside, the game runs very smoothly. At least until I put the graphics on full settings this weak and found out my super machine has a conniption about that idea, so I had to tone things down a bit. Again, I seriously think it’s the RAM. But I get really smooth gameplay with ALMOST full setups, so that’s not bad, and it’s a beautiful game to look at; if you can get past the monotony of the dungeons.

So far, that should be my biggest complaint, despite the randomly generated zones not being enough. Hopefully the devs can do something about it in a future patch. Part of the charm of video games is wondering what’s around the corner and seeing something new.

Now, about that hunter of mine; Started off great, one of my first fps ventures and no complaints. But something happened; It started taking a long time to clear areas. The air attacks are a nice touch and do massive damage, but I have to wait for them to work. I have a feeling I’ve sacrificed their skill trees. But he can still run well, his unique rifle is awesome; I think I got it around level 5-6 and have been upgrading it all the time. I was able to add a legendary attribute to it that gives a rebounder chance and triggers frequently. But, like I said, she’s been going slow, so I tried something different.

The sword master is FANTASTIC. From the beginning he could clear an area in a matter of minutes. Being attacked by a dozen mobs? No problem! And at level 15, he sported two legendary hive blades, hot knives through butter, that’s what they really are. One has a mod with explosive spikes, another has a poison nova; and she has a legendary item with a rebounding attribute… or maybe it was just another mod; regardless, three AOEs and two legendary swords are nothing to laugh about. Even at level 21 he still hasn’t slowed down.

I even took a trip to Stonehenge in the hunter. It’s a nice place, a real treat after the endless tunnels and burned-out streets. He got one of the blades from the swordmaster’s hive in a wooded area, thanks for the shared stash Devs!

I can’t wait to see what else this game has in store for me, I’ll be writing more soon; I’m learning to write and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon. Bye!
