How to get to Ladakh, India – Tourist guide

Ladakh is the most exotic region of the northernmost Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is sandwiched between two mighty mountain ranges; the Great Himalayas and the majestic Karakoram mountains. Leh is the main city of the region. It is the gateway for tourism in the region. It is well connected by air and road. The nearest railway station to reach Leh is Jammu Tawi, at a distance of about 690 km from Leh.

By air: Ladakh’s airport is located in Leh, which is the main city in the region. Leh airport is well connected with various flights like Goair, Jet Airways, Air India Jetlite and Kingfisher Airlines from Delhi, Srinagar and Chandigarh. Due to heavy snowfall in winters (December to February), Ladakh often remains without supply from the rest of the world.

By rail: There is no railway station in Ladakh region. But the closest railway to get here is in Jammu. Jammu is located at a distance of about 690 km from Leh. Jammu Railway Station is well connected by rail to major cities in India. Jammu is well connected to Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum by directed rail services. From Jammu you can get regular bus services to Leh. Taxis or cabs are also available for hire.

By highway: There are two main road routes to reach Leh, Ladakh. One is from Srinagar (the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir) and the second is from Manali (a hill station in the state of Himachal Pradesh).

You can get regular bus services from Srinagar to Leh. Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation operates regular regular and luxury bus services from Srinagar to Leh via Kargil.

Srinagar–Leh Highway it is open for travelers from June to November. The road distance between Srinagar and Leh is around 434 km.

Manali–Leh Highway (Leh Manali Highway) is around 473 km. Manali and Leh are well connected by regular bus services from Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation and Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation. The route is open for travelers between June and November. The road is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall.
