Important Tips for Foolproof Drywall Finishing

Whether you’re working on finishing drywall for a ceiling after removing popcorn texture or a wall that needed a replacement sheet, it’s important to get the job done right. Obviously, drywall ceiling and wall panels are not visible once they have been covered with texture, paint, or wallpaper, but they do serve a very important function as a ceiling or wall structure. Therefore, you want to ensure that the installation or patching is done to improve the stability of the drywall.

tip 1

Although it generally takes a bit of practice and patience to get drywall work right, this type of project is one that anyone could complete. Keep in mind that regardless of the different techniques being considered, the key to getting the project done right has to do with good hand/eye coordination. To help get familiar with finishing drywall, you may want to consider purchasing a small sheet and practicing before working on the actual drywall sheet of the ceiling or wall. That way, when you’re ready to start the actual project, you’ll feel confident.

tip 2
Before you start patching or installing new drywall to finish, make sure the surface is prepared and secure. For example, installing a new ceiling will require you to choose the right drywall ceiling texture. Once you have the materials of your choice, make sure the drywall is in place properly. For this, each panel will need to be securely screwed into the ceiling joists or wall studs. Additionally, screws would need to be placed every 16 inches for the walls and every 12 inches for the ceiling.

tip 3

For mud that would be applied to seams or used to repair a damaged section of drywall or ceiling, make sure the product is the right consistency and free of lumps. Unfortunately, any small bulge is likely to produce air bubbles that cause problems. As for the mud product, the easiest option would be to use premixed mud, which would be poured into a bucket and water added to create a consistency that resembles icing on a cake.

Tip 4

Finally, for drywall finishing, you will need to decide whether the seams will be covered with mesh or paper tape. There is no right or wrong choice for drywall ceiling or wall installation, more personal preference. However, most experts recommend that mesh be used for tapered seams. Then, to make this process easy and convenient, fold a regular hanger that the ribbon would hang on so that the ribbon is easy to reach but not tangled.
