New to LinkedIn? Where to invite and manage recommendations

Yesterday, while discussing LinkedIn recommendations with a small group of new business owners, I discovered that they couldn’t easily find the “Recommendation” link on their profile. It was visible on my profile but not on theirs.

I finally noticed that with the changes LinkedIn made to its top navigation bar on June 9, the link to add or manage recommendations had been moved to a much less prominent location in Privacy & Settings.

While it may be nice to see Endorsements on your LinkedIn profile, the actual value of them is questionable. After all, it’s not uncommon to be backed by someone who has no real way of knowing if the skill they’re backing you for is actually a skill you possess.

Most of us with a LinkedIn profile have received such recommendations and wondered about them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy when people add their approval of my skills to my profile. But, in the general scheme of things, I would rather have a recommendation with some meat to add to my profile!

If you already have recommendations showing on LinkedIn, you probably won’t notice the difference because the information is still available to you on your profile.

But for those who are new to LinkedIn or want to invite a recommendation, you need to dig deeper to find where the feature is now.

The steps below will help you find the referral management area on your LinkedIn profile.

Step 1 – Hover over your profile photo to display a dropdown menu, and then click on ‘Privacy & Settings’.

Step 2: In the ‘Profile’ tab, near the bottom half of the page, find and then click the words ‘Manage your referrals’ to reach your destination.
