resolving conflict

Disagreement between people is inevitable, however, if it is not resolved, it can lead to a complete breakdown of communication. You must accept that the other person’s problems are real to them, no matter how far from reality you think they are. You should also eliminate any personal aggression and avoid personal attacks, as this will lead to things not being resolved.

Here are some suggestions that may help you troubleshoot:-

1. Organize a Neutral meeting place – If possible, hold the meeting at a mutually agreed upon location away from your office and, indeed, from theirs. This will help create a balanced meeting. Make sure you are not disturbed and agree on a time frame for the discussion.

2. Use a facilitator/referee – It may be helpful to use/employ a facilitator when the problem seems irreconcilable without one. In which case, make sure you use someone who sets clear guidelines and gets your agreement that you’re both committed to making this work.

2. Mutual respect – As you begin the meeting, you should respect both yourself and the person you are having difficulty with. It is the problem you want to solve to enable you to work/be friendly with others in the future.

2. Legitimate disagreement – You must accept disagreement as natural and unavoidable and even potentially acknowledge the fact that disagreement can be positive in reaching a better solution to a situation.

3. Form a contract – You must contract to work on the issue for mutual resolution and mutual benefit.

Resolving the disagreement is a scenario that needs a win-win resolution. Without this, one party will invariably walk away unhappy and this could affect future business situations.
