Salad Anyone? Where to go for a veggie bowl in Orange County, CA

Salad. Many people consider it a garnish, to accompany “real food”. Personally, I have always liked having salad as a main dish. It’s healthy (if you choose it wisely), light, yet filling, and it really does taste good. My son has told friends and family numerous times that he has never seen anyone but me practically dance a happy dance just because I’m eating a plate of vegetables.

In Orange County, California, I am not alone in my search for a delicious vegetable dish. Here are a few worth trying:

-Spasso is in Laguna Hills. Yes, they also serve great Italian food, but two of my favorite salads come from this restaurant. If you want a vegetarian salad, choose asparagus and artichoke. Crisp and fresh with a light lemon dressing. For something more substantial, opt for the grilled salmon. It also includes asparagus, but also fresh mozzarella, fresh and sun-dried tomatoes, and romaine lettuce. So tasty, even if you don’t use dressing, you will be a happy camper. They serve good Italian bread made nice, warm and toasted with it.

-Rutabegorz in Orange. This organic restaurant has been around and changed their menu over the years, but they did put together some fun dishes. As I mentioned, they change their fare, so be flexible and try some pumpkin or banana bread with your salad of choice. You will not be disappointed.

-BJ’s Brewery. Several throughout the county. They have so many to choose from, from very healthy to “why bother, I have used up the calories for the day.” But they are all very good. Because the brewery is attached, the breads are fresh and the yeast smell abounds, so try a piece with your choice.

-Claim Jumpers. Again, this chain, which started in Los Alamitos, has many locations. Not only do they have several absolutely delicious salads to order from the menu, but they also have one of the best salad bars to offer their own masterpiece. My favorite used to be the wild greens with cranberries and candied walnuts; for whatever reason, they take it on and off the menu at a whim. Since you’re eating salad, splurge on one of their fabulous muffins. The bran muffin tastes more like chocolate. But if you’re watching the calories, share with one, if not two hungry friends, because any of your bakery goodies are yummy and I’m sure it’s too full of too much of what you’re trying to avoid eating.

-Replanting. Another chain is known as the place for soup, salad and dessert. Very family oriented. Many healthy and unhealthy options. This one is here because they do a good job of making sure everything they serve stays fresh and clean. There is a way for everyone from vegans to meat lovers to enjoy a decent meal.

There you have it – you can have great, healthy food that is filling up in Orange County, California, now that you know where to find it!
