That way, you can have them maxed out for makeup or soften the lighting to create a spa-like vibe. Ensure a perfectly lit bathroom space with lighting layers on separate circuits, allowing you to raise or lower levels. For true Hollywood glamour, surround a mirror with lights, star-style, for essential side-by-side illumination. Use mini-capsule lamps (available from John Cullen) as a modern alternative to traditional bulbs, which can be connected to a dimmer.

“Downlighters need direction,” says Jenny Smart, senior lighting designer at John Cullen. ‘Bounce light off walls and sinks, or set them against a tiled surface to accent colors and textures.’

A low level light source adds royal glamour. Install lighting that washes the floor with a soft glow or mount lights under a floating vanity or sink.

For total feminine glamour, there’s nothing better than a pretty chandelier. “Unfortunately, building regulations mean that in most bathrooms it’s impossible to install a working model, as they’re not waterproof,” says Leslie Taylor of Taylor’s Etc. “A good way to avoid this is to do a little cheating by installing recessed lights above the chandelier to make the crystals sparkle.’

“Finishing touches aren’t just about aesthetics,” says Hayley Tarrington.
