Ringworm is an infectious skin disease spread by fungi called dermatophytes. It spreads by forming a ring-shaped pattern on the skin with a circular rash that swells at the edges and cleanses in the center.

However, ringworm is a curable disease that should never be taken lightly or ignored. If left untreated, it will spread and can become chronic. As soon as you notice symptoms such as itching, burning, dryness or circular scaly rashes on your skin, see your GP for immediate treatment.

Regular treatment for ringworm usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks, depending on its intensity. The most common treatment methods include the application of topical antifungal creams such as miconazole or chlorithmazole to the affected areas. These creams and many anti-ringworm ointments are readily available.

Since creams may not be applied to the affected area, such as the toenails or scalp, oral medications may be prescribed along with ointments specially developed for these parts of the body. Ringworm of the scalp is the leading cause of hair loss and requires aggressive treatment.

If the ringworm resists regular treatment, see a skin specialist. He may advise you to take oral medications along with special ointments to control or stop fungal growth. Oral medications are often accompanied by side effects including gastrointestinal upset, abnormal liver function, decreased blood clotting ability. If you are taking any medications for the treatment of ulcers or GERD, you should inform your doctor in advance, as they may interfere with this therapy.
