Why use a king size bed skirt on a queen size mattress?

Sometimes we run out of clean bed skirt available and are forced to use a king size on a queen size mattress. Can we adjust it to fit a queen size mattress? With little creativity, we can. That is, without using scissors or needles.

A queen-size mattress measures 60 by 80 inches, while a king-size bed measures 78 by 80 inches. To eliminate excess width, the bed skirt should be placed between the mattress and the box spring. What about the excess skirt? Gather the excess and secure it to the box spring.

While the skirt of a king-size bed can be adjusted to fit a queen-size mattress, its appearance is another matter to consider. It may not be attractive if it fits snugly around the box spring, especially if it is solid in color.

This is the problem one has to face in order to use a king-size bed skirt on a queen-size mattress. That is the difficulty with the type of platform that is one piece with the platform fabric secured under the mattress. This is also true for the bed frame and mattress height problem for skirt sagging.

The saying that for every problem there is always a solution is true. Today, bed skirts come in three separate panels, one panel for each side of the bed. One will find it easy to adjust the fall of the skirt without having to remove the mattress to put it on. They are pinned, allowing the skirt panel to be positioned between the box spring and the mattress. Adjust the height and then fix it. This type is easy to remove but not as stable as the other type of construction as it may lose its proper location.

Older styles typically come in a 14 “or 16” drop, which is often too long or too short considering there is no standard mattress and bed frame height. In reality, a cover bed skirt is not adjustable as it comes in one piece. To remove it, you first have to lift the mattress, which is very cumbersome, yet very stable as it will not lose its place.

Putting the king size bed skirt onto a queen size mattress is quite uncomfortable and not easy. You will need scissors, thread, and a sewing machine, that is, if you want to permanently convert it to fit a queen-size mattress. It is necessary to pull the excess towards the center of the mattress creating a crease along the center until it fits. Then sew along the center crease and then cut off the excess fabric from the newly sewn seam. Newly repaired bedding certainly won’t look as stylish as it should. Why go to the trouble of using a king-size bed skirt on a queen-size mattress when you can later use a floor-length bedspread?
