Why Valentine’s Movies Are Good Business

Every year, Hollywood doesn’t stop producing Valentine-themed movies. Movie studios always strive to have special seasons like Christmas, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day is no different. How many of us can say that we don’t like romantic movies or that we don’t have any favorite romantic movies?

This is why movie studios are willing to spend millions of dollars producing romantic movies and even casting A-list celebrities who demand multi-million dollar talent fees. The market for this genre is huge and definitely any businessman would take advantage of this.

However, it is very difficult to produce a successful romantic movie. Unlike big-budget blockbuster movies that rely heavily on cutting-edge CGI and action-packed sequences that usually draw a lot of viewers, romance movies almost always rely heavily on two things. First, the chemistry of the main actors and second, the story itself. The right marketing and the perfect timing of the launch also help.

Now, another way to attract moviegoers is to pick a bunch of A-list celebrities. And since these kinds of celebrities have a huge following, therefore attracting fans won’t be a big deal. However, fans can also be demanding and critical. So the story has to be strong and engaging too, and I should say appropriately modern.

So this year a movie fitting for the season of love and romance is coming out. ‘Valentine’s Day’, considered the greatest star cast in movie history, will be released on February 12, 2010 in the US.

The cast includes superstar Julia Roberts along with other A-list celebrities like Patrick Dempsey, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Queen Latifah, and many more. The film focuses on the intertwined love stories of ordinary people over the course of a Valentine’s Day.

This won’t be the first love-themed movie to feature an all-star cast. Just last year, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ was released, which was well received by moviegoers and became a smash hit grossing over $172 million domestically. It featured superstars like Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Scarlett Johansson, and much more.

In 2003, another romantic comedy film succeeded at the box office with a predominantly all-star British cast. ‘Love Actually’ starring Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, which made over $246 million.

Of course, there are more successful tandem-driven romance movies than all-star ensembles. But I think the latter caters to a market that wants to see a variety of stories in one movie and not just focus on a love team with one story throughout.

As the old adage goes, you can’t entertain everyone. There will always be people who will have negative opinions about a movie no matter how successful it is. But everyone has their own taste in movies and it’s just a matter of targeting the right market. So go ahead and watch a romantic movie right now and try soaking yourself in the love potion and while you’re at it, send your loved one a Valentine’s card.
