Wirehaired Pointer Griffon Dog Breed: Height, Weight, Color, History and Description

Description: The Wirehaired Pointer Griffon is a very strong hunting dog. With a slightly rounded top to the skull which, in profile, will appear square. The head is in proportion to the body. This breed has a brown nose with wide open nostrils and its teeth meet in a scissors bite. This breed has large, round-shaped eyes that are brown to yellow in color.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon’s ears are set on the line of the head and hang down, lying flat against the head. This dog has a long neck. Height is 20-24 inches and weight is 50-60 pounds. It has rounded front legs that are straight; this dog has webbed feet and is a wonderful swimmer. In countries that allow docking the tail is docked, this is a straight tail that is carried high.

The wire-haired specimen gryphon has a medium-length, rough, thick, double-layered coat. The undercoat is soft. This dog has bushy eyebrows, a beard and a mustache. The colors we see are: steel gray with brown, white and orange, white and solid brown, white and brown.

History: The wirehaired pointer griffin came about due to the hard work of a Dutchman named Eduard Korthal, he was a very keen hunter and wanted the best hunting dog he could breed. He mixed setter, German griffin and French and German pointer. What was amazing was that he got the dog he wanted in about 20 years, he also wrote the standards and formed the Griffon Club of America in 1916. This breed matched what he was looking for and this dog outperforms small game.
