Choosing the Right Countertop Slab Thickness

Choosing the right thickness for your kitchen or bathroom countertop may seem like a minor decision, but in fact, it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make when selecting new granite or marble countertops. The thickness of the slab affects the price, the method of installation and the resistance to breakage. Most granite and marble slabs are available in ¾” (2 cm) or 1-1/4″ (3 cm) thicknesses. 3 cm thick slabs have a better value in the end than 2 cm slabs. Apart from technical reasons, the 3 cm material has a better edge appearance as the profile can be manufactured in more detail without having to laminate the edge. A laminate edge is where a thin strip of the same material is applied under the perimeter of the countertop before the profile is cut. This treatment is regularly used on 2cm countertops to make them appear thicker, but the downside is that the seam between layers will be visible.

It is common to assume that 2cm material is less expensive because it is thinner than 3cm, but that is a myth. It is true that the material cost is lower when comparing the slabs, but the handling and manufacturing costs are the same as the 3 cm material since the process is the same regardless of thickness. Although the 3 cm slabs weigh more, the 2 cm ones cost the same in handling the material because it requires more attention and care to avoid breakage. 3 cm thick granite and marble countertops are strong enough to support their own weight when installed on cabinet bases. 2cm thick countertops are typically installed on top of a 3/8″ plywood deck for increased strength and weight resistance.

2 cm marble countertops are more prone to cracking because it is a softer stone. It has become a popular choice for bathroom vanities because it has a “lighter” appeal in both color and thickness. With proper care and attention to maintenance, marble is best suited to the bathroom. 3cm thick granite slabs are the best choice for kitchen countertops due to their strength and stain resistance. When the edge profile is solid with no seams, it gives the countertop more value and is best used in a high utility area like a kitchen. Another benefit of using 1-inch material in the kitchen is that it can support overhang clearances up to 12″ with concealed or decorative supports. This is especially useful in an eat-in kitchen where bar stools run the length of the cabinet.
