Find your attitude indicator

An important concept called “Attitude Indicator” is taught in flight dynamics. Also known by other names such as Gyro Indicator, Attitude Director Indicator, to name a few, this instrument is used to tell the pilot the orientation of the aircraft with reference to the ground, among other things. The pilot constantly monitors the attitude indicator during takeoff, landing, and throughout the flight. Obviously, I have oversimplified the explanation and the science behind it. But my goal is to help you understand how there is an “Attitude Indicator” that we all have within us, that we all use or could use as we navigate the journey of personal relationships, careers, and social life.

From our childhood, our behavior with our friends, relatives and wherever we go is under constant scrutiny from our parents. The bad attitude is immediately brought to our attention and we are told to correct it. Good attitude is (usually) rewarded with praise, among other things.

In adolescence, most of us are able to distinguish between a good and a bad attitude. In school and college we pay a lot of attention to our attitude, as well as the attitude of others. By now we know how to distinguish between people with good and bad attitude. We tend to be friends with those who fall into our good attitude ranking and often stay away from those we see as having a bad attitude. Next, we use our Attitude Indicator with most people in our professions, personal relationships, our friends and acquaintances.

So what is your attitude indicator? How does it look? Obviously, it’s not like a physical indicator with numbers and needles like the one used in flight dynamics. The indicator that you carry within you is intangible. Your attitude indicator is the feelings you experience. A good attitude indicates the feeling of positivity. You experience this when you or someone you are in presence with has a good attitude. Whereas, a clear indicator of a bad attitude is the feeling of negativity.

Whether you choose to have a good or bad attitude in any area of your life is not something you decide based on the events that happen in your life or the people around you. His choice is independent of external circumstances. Surely your attitude is its choice and not something governed by its environment.

You and I use our Attitude Indicator to learn, monitor and even transform our attitude, as well as understand the attitude of others. Watch this detailed video about the author’s attitude.
