How to handle and repair a leaking waterbed?

Waterbeds are fun and they are also a healthy option for some people to finally get a good night’s sleep. But waterbeds carry a small risk compared to regular mattresses. Whenever it comes to water in closed environments, there is a risk of water leaks. When it comes to waterbeds, the risk is threefold. First, a leaky waterbed could lose stability and become too soft, so that the person using it slowly sinks a little deeper. The second problem with a leaky waterbed is that the person using it can suddenly get wet (more or less quickly depending on the size of the hole). The third problem could be water seeping into the bedroom environment and causing water damage.

A big problem is to safely identify the leak and assess the damage. Can you fix the leak yourself or do you need a professional to come and fix your waterbed? If the leak is small enough that you can fix it, where do you get a repair kit for your waterbed? If you can find the leak in your waterbed, you should be able to see what the problem is and if you can fix it by applying a patch. Assuming you opt for auto repair, you need to check what kind of repair kit you need. Not all waterbed repair kits are created equal, as you might guess. Check your waterbed manufacturer’s website or call the retailer where you purchased the waterbed to make sure you’re getting the correct waterbed repair kit.

Once you have a matching repair kit, it’s time to get to work. Carefully clean the area around the leak in your waterbed. Make sure you can clearly see the hole. If not, mark it with a text marker or other soft pen. The reason for marking the hole is so you can actually apply the patch in the best location. Now cut the patch to the proper size, apply the adhesive that comes with your waterbed repair kit and place it over the affected area. Push gently but firmly to apply the patch. Do not put extra pressure or weight (do not lie down to sleep) on the bed within the first one to two hours after applying the patch. That should be it. Give it some time and then go back to enjoying your waterbed.
