How to Protect Yourself from Losing Engagement Rings and Jewelry

You may have read about a British couple, John Drennan and Daniella Anthony, who were visiting Central Park in New York City on Friday, November 30, 2018.

John took advantage of the special occasion to ask Daniella to marry him. After the emotional question, he presented Daniella with a valuable diamond ring.

It was then that the unthinkable happened: the ring slipped off Daniella’s finger and fell onto the subway grid.

Apparently nothing could save the lost ring, even enlisting the help of the NYPD!

With their flight soon to return to their home country, John and Daniella lost all hope and forgot to give their contact information to the police.

After trying to rescue the precious ring again, the best of New York were able to remove it. As for social networks, they asked for the public’s help to locate the owners of the ring. Its fruits bore fruit: John and Daniella learned of the precious find, while praising the law enforcement officers who did not give up on the search that meant so much to them.

The men in blue were delighted with the happy conclusion, too, though they offered some advice: watch out for the subway grids!

Insurance professionals offer additional advice on the subject.

• Check your homeowners or renters insurance policy to see if your precious jewelry has adequate coverage. Ask your insurance specialist for related advice and if you could be better off with independent jewelry coverage.

• Keep proof of payment, such as receipts and invoices, documenting the ownership of the jewelry that will facilitate the filing of any insurance claim.

• Take pictures of your jewelry and save them in a digital and paper file for a simpler insurance claim process.

• You will also need to obtain a professional appraisal of your jewelry from time to time in order to verify the current value of the jewelry.

• Repair any jewelry that needs to be fixed to prevent it from slipping.

• If you choose not to wear your precious jewelry, it is best to keep it in a locked location out of the reach of others, such as a bank vault or a home safe.

• Make sure you never pack your jewelry in a suitcase while traveling. Wear whatever jewelry you want to take with you and put others in the bank or in your home’s hidden safe.

Remember to speak to the professionals at an independent insurance agency for more advice on associated protection policies and appraisal.
