The researchers collected health data from 73,000 mother-infant pairs in Europe. Researchers at the University of Barcelona conducted this study considering previous studies that supported the same conclusion. These experts discovered how acetaminophen affected unborn babies with autism more than those who were not exposed to this drug. The study found that 19% of the fetuses showed autism, while 21% showed ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) symptoms as young children.
What is the medicine acetaminophen?
The common name for this medication is acetaminophen, and about 52 million people in the US take acetaminophen. Additionally, around 600 medications contain acetaminophen, an over-the-counter medication, as well as a prescription pain reliever.

Researchers say the drug enters the fetus’s body through a thin wall and can cause autism at an early age. However, sometimes the disease appears later in adulthood. At the same time, acetaminophen is the only pain reliever doctors find safe during pregnancy, so women can’t stop taking it. However, women should try to avoid drugs during pregnancy. Autism is not curable; however, its symptoms can be reduced through treatments, including therapy. Certain support programs also help a child with autism.
