The two pillars of a successful interior design project!

Whenever I think of any design, be it interior design or product design, some things come to mind very naturally. These are in the form of questions.

The best part is that the answers to these questions can lead to a very successful design itself. Let’s see how.

If I’m planning to design a piece of furniture, say a double bed, I immediately start to relate to what I already know about double beds, some photo/image I’ve already seen, something I’ve seen in a furniture store, etc. ..Then I start to think about what material I should think about, the budget, dimensions, age group of the people who are going to use it, etc… If you answer these questions one by one on a piece of paper, you will get a plan of the process design, so you can turn it into technical drawings, with all the carpentry details and finally the product.

Among the questions mentioned above, some are directly related to the function of the double bed as a piece of furniture.

What does this mean?

When I ask myself, what should be the dimensions of a double bed? I have very little freedom to decide the dimensions of the bed, because there are certain rules to follow to fulfill its basic function, which is comfort.

But what if I say I’ll keep the total surface area of the bed the same, but make it round on the plan? It will be OK..

Now here I am trying to achieve both function and aesthetics, without sacrificing comfort for the person who will wear it.
So, during any design process, there will be times when the designer needs to make some decisions where they have to put their wildest ideas aside and pay attention to function first.

That is why the true success of an interior design project is a good balance between function and aesthetics.

Expressing this kind of balance through design is not an easy task, because function is universally accepted, but aesthetics,
not always.

What does this mean?

Beauty is always relative. A sink has a common universal function of a handwashing device, but it is
the beauty is relative. What’s beautiful to me might not be to you.

So a design expression can have a style unique to the designer himself. The designer may be more comfortable with certain types of materials/finishes/color combinations, etc. that can be reflected in the designs of it.

Despite these personal touches, a good design always puts the needs of the user first. A good designer has a certain type of convincing power in his style that he uses to express himself in the design without sacrificing the likes/dislikes of the user.

There are designers who feel more comfortable designing only a certain type of space, such as bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, public spaces such as restaurants, clubs, gyms.

Of course, this is a completely personal choice, but there is this same message in your designs, vent your ego and design for the best parameters with the worst possibilities in mind. This is what gives birth to a great design.

I hope this article has been helpful.
