Your internal dialogue and your mental image determine the level of dedication to your actions

Develop a new consciousness and awareness

What is the predominant internal dialogue taking place in your mind? Is it an affirming or discouraging voice trying to convince you that the world is a dark and scary place? It’s easy to get sucked into this narrative because the voices are real, so we concluded they must be true. Or are? I often use an exercise in seminars where I ask participants to tell me what they will think of next. I explain to you, if you identify with your thoughts, surely you must know what your next thought will be. Unless there are psychics in the audience, people rarely know what their next thought will be until it happens. The point is: Thoughts come and go in our minds and, unless we give them meaning, they have little power of their own.

So let’s get back to your internal dialogue. You may be used to hearing the voice in his head, that he may no longer be aware of negative thoughts. However, that is what we must pay attention to if we want to change our circumstances. It is said: thoughts become things, which means that everything in the physical universe begins with a thought. The house or apartment you live in exists because an architect had an idea for the design of the building. His smartphone, laptop or computer started his life with a thought. The point I want to emphasize is: our reality is the result of our thinking, be it positive or negative. When negative circumstances appear, they simply shed light on the truth of our thoughts.

For example, consider a current problem in your life that you want to improve. Do you think there is a solution that you have not yet discovered? I hope you realize that the nature of your problem results from your thinking alone. This does not mean that your thinking is flawed, it means that you have either consciously or unconsciously directed your thoughts to something unwanted and it has manifested as a result. Do you agree, if we want a different result, we must change our thoughts or at least our perception of the problem? It was Albert Einstein who once said: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that we used when we created them.” In short: we must develop a new consciousness and awareness in which to perceive our problems from a higher level. Consciousness itself cannot solve the problems created by our current level of thinking.

Consciousness shines the light on our thoughts

How does this relate to your internal dialogue or mental image that influences your actions? If we replay the same script and view it through the lens of negativity, it must eventually manifest in our lives. We agreed earlier that thoughts become things. What we think about and what we pay attention to, should it appear in our reality? I am not talking about the law of attraction but about universal laws that govern the framework of reality. The Hermetic aphorism says: “As it is within, so it is without.” That is, what happens at the level of thoughts is reflected in our reality. When we combine internal dialogue with a mental image, we add color to what appears in our lives. We define it and give it energy, no matter if it is a negative or positive thought. This is an idea that motivational psychologist and author Dr. Shad Helmstetter emphasizes in What to say when you talk to yourself when he says, “Self-talk is a way of overriding our past negative programming by erasing it or replacing it with new, conscious, positive directions. Self-talk is a practical way of living our lives with active intent rather than passive acceptance.”

People often ask: Does this mean that I have to be attentive to every thought? No, since that requires a lot of mental energy better spent on other things. The key is to observe our thoughts with heightened awareness instead of being oblivious to them. Consciousness is the key that frees us from the prison of negativity and self-destruction. It is the key to inner peace and freedom because it is the filter of our thoughts. Consciousness sheds light on the consistency of our thoughts. If we want to change our external conditions, being aware of what we think is the first step. I often use the example of a ship changing course in the middle of its ocean voyage. First, the captain must change course and plot new coordinates and relay this information to his crew. The same goes for ourselves: our consciousness sheds light on our internal self-talk and our mental image. If we want to change our future, it must begin by observing our mind and become aware of our unconscious thoughts. Only then does the level of dedication to our actions become congruent with a shift in consciousness.
