Who needs magnesium?

Well now, that’s a question, isn’t it?

Until the other Sunday I would have said vaguely,

“Oh well, I guess everyone, to some degree.”

Then that Sunday I got up, had breakfast, and got ready to go to church. All the time with the uncomfortable feeling that I was going to collapse. –

That?

Strange, but what worried me, was that I had also started to feel a little dizzy, dizzy, you know, like my brain was spinning around inside my head, not knowing what to do with itself. Which, I admitted, had begun to feel a bit scary.

However, I think it came to a head when I took a walk looking for a church closer to my house that I could walk to instead of taking the car. But that day, instead of walking up the driveway and noticing that the parking lot was full, I decided that the service had probably already started, so since I didn’t want to walk to a place where I didn’t know anyone, I headed back home. . Instead of going in, sitting down with a Panadol and a cup of tea, I just picked up the car keys and drove to my regular church. Also quite new to me, having only been living here for a few weeks.

Afterward, I went to a nearby cafe for lunch with some of my new friends, where I again began to have trouble standing upright. When I told one of my colleagues about it, she told me about a relative of hers who had experienced something similar. Since he is a rancher, he reminded her of ‘The Staggers’, who suffer when cattle are deficient in magnesium. He told the doctor about him and she advised him to try a magnesium supplement.

Now, until a few weeks earlier, I had been taking a supplement that actually included magnesium, but I had run out of tablets. The main supplement in the tablets was turmeric, not magnesium. At that point I thought, oh well, I’ll buy more next biweekly store. Naturally, since this was something I had bought because I thought it might be good for my health, it really wasn’t something I thought was important. So I just forgot about the next store, telling myself when I remembered (after I got home of course), don’t worry, I’ll buy the next store instead. Needless to say, I also forgot then. is

However, after my Sunday “episode”, I made sure to buy some magnesium tablets and started taking them daily. Within a week he seemed to be back to normal, so again I forgot about it. Although I continued to take the tablets.

Until I did, I ran out and thought I’d wait until the next store, well you know the saying, the one who doesn’t remember their history will still get the same results. A few days of falling asleep sitting in a comfortable chair even during the day, then the return of the swimming head problem, sent me to the pharmacy pretty quickly.

But it also sent me to the computer and my second favorite occupation, deep research. I quickly discovered that people may not need a magnesium supplement if they eat a few servings of nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, leafy greens, milk, yogurt, and fortified foods, which are all good sources of magnesium. Even water (tap, mineral, bottled) can provide it. Unfortunately, though, many of us don’t eat all the foods that will help us, do we?

And for me, the next question is: WHY do we need it? –

Did you know that the Mayo Clinic reported that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production, synthesizes proteins, DNA and RNA? Like some antibiotics and osteoporosis medications. In addition, the antioxidant glutathione contributes to structural bone development and helps increase calcium absorption.

Plus, just 1 ounce of raw almonds contains 20% of your daily magnesium requirement. And who doesn’t like almonds? OK. I know there are some who don’t and even some who are allergic, but for many of us YUM.

Magnesium also plays a role, in our metabolism cells use magnesium to transport calcium and potassium ions through cell walls.

On the other hand, low magnesium levels have been linked to osteoporosis, anxiety, depression, among other conditions, as well as ADHD.

Magnesium is sometimes recommended as a supplement to help treat people with high blood pressure, some chronic conditions, diabetes, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Heavy drinking and alcoholism have been shown to sometimes result in chronically low magnesium levels, as have conditions such as Crohn’s disease and celiac disease. Older adults (like me ï Š) may be prone to lower levels than younger adults. Partly because the gut often becomes less efficient at absorbing magnesium, while our kidneys can become less efficient at retaining magnesium. Also, type 2 diabetes can cause the kidneys to excrete too much magnesium, leading (surprise, surprise) to a magnesium deficiency.

Several long-term studies have found a correlation between high magnesium levels and a decreased risk of heart disease, sudden cardiac death, and ischemic heart disease (National Institute of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements). This also helps prevent strokes. An analysis of 7 studies, including one of more than 200,000 people, found that an additional 100 mL of magnesium per day reduced the risk of stroke by 8% (reviewed February 2012 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition). Very positive findings.

Side effects of the supplement may include

Nausea, cramps and diarrhea

It can interact with certain medications, diuretics, heart medications, or antibiotics.

Patients with diabetes, intestinal, heart or kidney disease should consult their doctor before starting treatment.

Signs of overdose may include nausea, diarrhea, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, and fatigue.

As with many medical remedies, very high doses can have dire effects.

There was a lot more information revealed through my research, but all things considered, including the disappearance of the original symptoms I experienced before I started taking my magnesium supplements, I truly believe that keeping an eye on one’s health after starting a magnesium course, As long as any adverse effects are noted, it is a good way to increase magnesium in the body and support health and fitness.

So, to my original question: Who needs magnesium? –

I would have to say – Probably all.
